Space Slug

Research Board

I have decided to make another research board, this time consisting of just the Space Slug. I have looked at a variety of different styles of this character, including cartoon, artist’s image, toys, models etc. I have also done a small mood board at the bottom of the image, using colours that I would expect to see used on the Space Slug. Although the word ‘Slug’ is used, I feel the creature itself looks more like a giant worm, which is what I have based the colours really on, including oranges, browns, pinks, yellows, tanned, flesh etc. I believe this will help me create a realistic and interesting looking Space Slug figure.

Three Models

While watching and researching into this scene I already know what three models I am going to be recreating. These are:

·         The Millennium Falcon space ship

·         An Asteroid

·         The Space Slug

As I stated in an earlier post, I already know the basis of creating an asteroid, so I believe that the most challenging will be the space ship, as this will not only need to have enough detail for my audience to distinguish what the ship is, I also need to make it easy to move about as this will be doing the most movement during the animation.

Final Idea - Space Slug Scene

Space Slug Scene from The Empire Strikes Back

Now I have decided what scene to base my 3D Animation on, I have decided to look in further to establish what exactly I want to happen in my scene as well as the three models I have to create as part of the assignment.

Below is a clip of the Space Slug scene from The Empire Strikes Back, of course I am not going to make it look exactly like it is seen here. (This is the only video of this scene I could find online)

Research Board - Final Idea

Research Board

This is my Research Board. While I previously decided I wished to base my assignment on scenes involving space and asteroids, I searched for scenes involving these. I came across these images, both from the internet and from the films themselves; I now know some of the techniques I need to use to make this production effective, for example, because it is in space I need to use darkness and lots of shadows, as well as a lot of movement from my models.

Final Idea

While watching the films I came across a scene where the ship The Millennium Falcon escapes from a Giant Space Slug. Although the Scene from The Empire Strikes Back is only about 15 seconds in length, it is a very interesting and memorable scene from the hit 1980 movie. I felt this would be appropriate as it can be done simply but also effectively. This is what I have decided to base my assignment on.

Ideas - Mood Board

Star Wars

I believe I will use a scene from the film series Star Wars. This is because I have grown up watching the movies and I thoroughly believe that I would be most comfortable in recreating one of these scenes, as well as recreating models from them, more so than any other Science Fiction film.

Using illustrating techniques such as Mood Boards and Research Boards to gain ideas before I attempt to produce these models will help me gain more of an understanding of the modelling systems I will be using, such as colour, material, lighting etc. It may also help me decide what scene I wish to base my assignment on.

Asteroids

During one of our tutorials, we were taught how to create Fruit. Using the same techniques to create the fruit we can also use them to create Asteroids. This gave me an idea of a scene that involves asteroids or space, which I believe could be a more simple and interesting idea to use. This is what I will base my research on.

Mood Board

This is my Mood Board, where I have looked into different styles of colour which have interested me, as well as some I have created myself. I have looked at categories such as Metals, Planets, Lasers as I feel these are most appropriate towards a space scene.

Assignment 1

Introduction

Using 3Ds Max, I will be recreating a scene from a Science Fiction Movie of my choice, involving at least three different models. While I enjoy this genre of film and can think of many different ideas to use, I must ensure that I keep it simple and choose feasible models, as this is my first time using this piece of software. With so many different films and styles to choose from, such as Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek, Blade Runner, Independents Day etc. choosing the right scene will be difficult, so I shall use techniques I learn from tutorials as well as research into my chosen topic.
